What is the difference between CBD and THC?

CBD and THC are both naturally occurring compounds known as cannabinoids found in cannabis plants, which include both marijuana and hemp. They interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system but have different effects:

  1. Psychoactive properties: The most significant difference between CBD and THC is that THC is psychoactive, meaning it can make users feel “high”, while CBD is not. THC bins with the cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptors in the brain to produce a euphoric or intoxicated feeling.
  2. Medical benefits: Both CBD and THC have potential therapeutic properties, but their applications can differ. THC is often used for its euphoric effects and is also used medically for conditions like pain, muscle spasticity, glaucoma, insomnia, and low appetite. CBD is being studied for use in treating conditions like epilepsy, anxiety, depression, pain and many others. Importantly, CBD provides these therapeutic benefits without making the user feel “high”.
  3. Side effects: THC can cause temporary side effects such as increased heart rate, dry mouth, red eyes, memory loss, slower reaction times, and coordination problems. On the other hand, CBD is generally well-tolerated and doesn’t have the same potential for abuse as THC. Some people may experience side effects like fatigue, diarrhea, or changes in weight or appetite.

Despite the potential benefits of both CBD and THC, more research is needed, especially large-scale clinical trials.  It is crucial to use these compounds responsibly and consult with a healthcare provider before using them therapeutically.
